The 110,000 square-foot field will be named New Balance Field and will provide BU’s nationally ranked field hockey team with a new on-campus facility. The team has played its ‘home’ games off-campus since the 2001 season.

“New Balance Field will be a major addition to our athletic and recreation facilities,” said BU President Dr. Robert A. Brown. “I am very grateful to New Balance for its leadership and support and to our alumni who have given generously to make this facility a reality. The field will benefit not only our student-athletes and the greater Boston University community, but it will allow us to expand our very successful NCAA Division I athletics program.”

The space beneath the field will provide approximately 350 parking spaces. In addition, the field will host a 500 square-foot press box. The total cost of the parking structure and the field is estimated to be $24 million.

The boys over at West Side Lax have just released their previews for the Orregon High School Lacrose season and give a special shout out to Rhino founder Ryan Powell; “There are a lot of great stories in Oregon from the past year. Ryan Powell is continuing to play an integral role in the growth of the game in the Pacific Northwest. This past summer, RP took a group of rising freshman back to the Lake Placid Tournament and his squad took 3rd in the U-15 bracket. A majority of these players will be contributing to the successes of the top programs in Oregon for years to come. Rhino and other elite clubs in the area are ensuring that Oregon continues to establish itself as one of the top states in the West.”

Portland’s own Henry Schoonmaker (Lincoln ‘10 & Rhino Alum) continues to rise and receive some love from the local press up at the prestigious Syracuse University. Check out the latest write up chronicling his rise and future with the storied program.

Syracuse University lacrosse team gets a lift from one of the sport’s most distant outposts

By Dave Rahme

Syracuse, NY — Not so long ago Syracuse University was the furthest thing from Henry Schoonmaker’s mind and one of the farthest from his Oregon home. Pardon him, then, for having to pinch himself occasionally to make sure he is really playing on the second midfield line for one of the nation’s Division I lacrosse powerhouses.

“Every once in a while you think about how you got here,” Schoonmaker (6-foot-1, 187 pounds), a redshirt freshman, said. “It’s kind of weird. It definitely is. Coming from Oregon, I never really expected this.”

There was little reason to, even though Schoonmaker was a 2010 U.S. Lacrosse All-American and the Oregon high school player of the year. He was excelling in the one of the nation’s most distant lacrosse outposts, and an illness during his sophomore year prevented him from attending the high-profile camps in the East that are essential for young talent hoping to be discovered.

“It takes a lot more effort to get yourself known when you’re playing out there,” Schoonmaker said. “You really have to work hard at it.”

Furman University will be announcing next Thursday the addition of varsity men’s and women’s lacrosse programs, officials within the athletic department have confirmed. The Paladins will become the second Division I program in South Carolina, though will be the only men’s program in the state after Presbyterian College canceled its program following the 2011 season.

A source said that the Paladins are tentatively targeting the spring of 2014 as a start date for both men’s and women’s teams, but would consider delaying until 2015 depending on prospective coaches’ input. Furman aims to hire both head coaches by the end of the spring.

The Rhino Rippers were recently featured over at laxallstars.com in a recap of their championship performance down at the Sandstorm Tournament. Check out the complete recap HERE complete with stats and some great pictures!

After a long weekend in the warmth and sun of Palm Springs all four Rhino winter select teams are back in town after a strong showing at the Sandstorm Lacrosse Tournament. The Rhino Rippers (U13) had the best weekend going 7-0 and bringing home the 1st place in the first year this event hosted a boys tournament. The Rhino Orange team had a strong showing going 3-1-1 to cap their winter season. The Rhino Roses and Rosebuds also found success in the sun with the Roses leaving with a 3-1 record and the Rhino Rosebuds going 4-1 making it all the way to the semi-finals.

This event capped off a very successful winter select season for Rhino with the Rhino Orangemen (U18) winning the Space Needle Shootout (first time for a team from Oregon). The Rip City Rhinos (U16) went 4-1 at the Adrenaline Challenge and showed very well. And the Rhino Rippers taking the inaugural U13 title at the Sandstorm Tournament. Great work by all Rhino Select teams and special thanks to all the players and parents for their support and hard work thoughout the season.

Charge On!
