SMITHFIELD, R.I. — Carthage native Ryan Powell was one of four former Syracuse University lacrosse players to qualify Wednesday for the 2010 U.S. men’s national training team following a three-day tryout at Bryant University.

Powell was one of 40 players selected by a 14-member selection committee, which included Orange head coach John Desko. Ex-SU standouts such as attacker Mike Leveille and midfielders Matt Abbott and Steven Brooks were also chosen.

The four participants advanced for an opportunity to compete in the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships, which take place next year in Manchester, England. Three training weekends are slated for this fall where a final roster of 23 players will be determined.

Former Orange midfielder and Immaculate Heart Central graduate Brendan Loftus was invited to try out, as were former SU players Dan Hardy, Sean Lindsay and Jarett Park.
